Who’s Fired Up?

From William Safire’s NYT Magazine Article, this story is getting little press but is very important to all you Obama Fans, “But then, thanks to a little search engine that could, I came across a front-page article in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer by Angela Galloway that said: “Obama, 45, worked the shrieking, whistling crowd like a rock star from the get-go. . . . ‘I am fired up. I am all fired up!’ ” The date of the Seattle paper is June 2, 2007, reporting a rally at a theater near Qwest Field the night before – exactly two weeks before the day that Childs supposedly first inspired Obama to adopt his famous rallying cry.”

  1. Interesting.  He does seem to have been peddling the apparently fictitious origin of the “fired up” thing pretty hard.  Safire’s conclusion:

    Because politics can be poetry, we may attribute to poetic license his heart-tugging, human-interest anecdote that led to his rousing, “Fired up! I am all fired up!” If placing his adoption of the phrase in a dramatic context helps bring us together, who can cavil?
