Dan Bosley keeps spewing the same tired rhetoric that just because there’s a bunch of cars in the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun parking lots bearing Massachusetts license plates doesn’t necessarily mean that the people driving those cars are Massachusetts residents. Huh?
The methodology is all screwed up, Bosley says. But he never offers any example of what the “right” methodology is. Perhaps, because, as most people know when it comes to Bosleynomics, what Dan Bosley says usually doesn’t make much fiscal or economic sense.
So I wasn’t surprised to see today’s Boston Herald story on Jonathan Kraft addressing a Massachusetts travel and tourism conference, citing all the cars in the Patriots Place parking lot bearing Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine license plates.
Kraft said that the new retail development is drawing many out-of-staters to spend their money in the Bay State economy. He recommended to the state’s travel and tourism leaders to become more involved in initiatives that will bring in more domestic and international visitors.
But, I don’t think Mr. Kraft understands that, according to Bosleynomics, his “methodology” is all wrong. Under Bosleynomics, it’s foolhardy for Mr. Kraft to assume that just because the Patriot’s Place parking lot is peppered with out-of-state cars, that means that the people driving those cars are from out-of-state.
And all those cars bearing Massachusetts license plates that are parked at Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, Twin River and Newport Grand every day, according to Bosleynomics, they’re not necessarily being driven by Massachusetts residents.
Maybe the cars are being driven by little old ladies from Pasadena visiting their Bay State grandchildren — and they borrowed the family car to zip down to Foxwoods for a quick game of bingo? According to Bosleynomics, that’s a more likely scenario than to assume that a Massachusetts resident is driving the car with Massachusetts license plates.
Under Bosleynomics, Mr. Kraft is just plain wrong. After all, how could anyone assume that just because a car bears Rhode Island license plates means the person driving it is from Rhode Island?
After all, all those people driving cars with Massachusetts license plates that are parked at the Salem Mall in Salem, New Hampshire. Those people driving those cars with Massachusetts license plates are really from … Iowa?
Or the woman driving the car with the “Live Free or Die” motto on the license plate? She’s really from New Hampshire? Nah, according to Bosleynomics, that little old lady’s just as likely to be from … Idaho?
Admit it, Mr. Kraft. Bosleynomics has you trumped. Next time you drive home to Newton from Foxboro in your car bearing the Massachusetts license plates, remember — according to Bosleynomics — there’s a 50-50 chance you’re really from … Mississippi?
So, let’s remember the underlying tenets of Bosleynomics:
“I’m right and everyone else is wrong.”
“Don’t confuse me with the facts”
“Or which do you believe? Me or your own eyes?”
So, remember, the next time that you, a Massachusetts resident, drive your car bearing Massachusetts license plates to an out-of-state venue, according to Bosleynomics, there’s a 50-50 chance you’re really from … Kosovo?

Can you provide a citation for Bosley’s comments? I don’t recall that exact quote. I think you’re mischaracterizing his position, assigning a ridiculous strawman to him.
<
p>Here’s what I was able to find from a Boston Globe article on June 11, 2007:
<
p>
<
p>Bosley is saying that the data was based on a very small sample, and that the amount gambled is not necessarily equal to the proportion of the cars in the lot, so you can’t say “on January 15, 10% of the cars in the lot were from MA, so that means that 10% of the amount gambled at Foxwods comes from MA”.
<
p>He’s not taking the strawman you’ve assigned to him that “Massachusetts license plates doesn’t necessarily mean that the people driving those cars are Massachusetts residents.”
<
p>I think you need to revise your article; your basic premise is a misrepresentation.
