Here’s something that struck me from the linked Globe article (click the blimp):
Romney vowed last night to stay in the Republican presidential race for the long term, even as he and his key advisers scheduled a meeting for today about the campaign’s future.
“One thing that’s clear is that this campaign is going on,” he told supporters at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. “We’re going to keep on battling, we’re going to go all the way to the convention, we’re going to win this thing and go to the White House.”
Hmmm … where have I heard that before?
“I’m in this through the convention and to the White House.”
That, of course, was John Edwards on January 6, after coming in second in Iowa. On January 29, after coming in third in New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, his advisors said the same thing:
Presidential candidate John Edwards, who has yet to win any of the Democratic nominating contests, will stay in the race until the party convention, campaign advisors said Monday.
But of course, we know what happened the next day.
So, really, how long is Romney going to stick it out? Take the poll!

Never discount the fact that a lot of conservatives really don’t like McCain. They also don’t much like California and anybody who wins there (except Reagan). It is too early to count Romney out.
<
p>I also think he’d be a stronger general contender than McCain, whose intangible liabilities include his age and his brash demeanor. People want someone they think is going to take the job seriously. Even W gave that impression the first time he ran, while McCain has a lot of moments where he just acts too cool for it all. So I think it’s better for Dem’s if McCain does win, but I wouldn’t count on it yet.
were right, but I’ll have to disagree on both points.
<
p>Romney has fared poorly overall, and IMHO his money can’t overcome his negatives. He’s a one term Governor from from MA, a Mormon, and he can be on any side of any issue on any given day, if the light is right.
Last week the WSJ editorial page came out and gave Mr. Bain Capital a kick in the nuts just for fun. What has he won to date? He’s trailing McCain by 300 delegates, when the nominee only needs to get 1191. That gap is far too large for him to make up.
<
p>McCain hasn’t quite closed the deal, but after his campaign was left for dead 6 months ago, he’s on the cusp of locking it up. The big money is coalescing behind him because they realize that he has a chance to actually win in November, despite the fact that Bush has poisoned the well for the GOP for years to come.
<
p>I would love it if Romney became the GOP nominee, because he is a mere cipher of a candidate who would be crushed in the general election. I don’t believe for a minute that Mitt could even carry MA in a general election, never mind win the presidency.
<
p>McCain is much more formidable candidate, despite all of his shortcomings (some of which you point out), and IMHO both Hillary and Obama would much rather face Romney than McCain.
McCain was seriously considering switching parties in order to run as John Kerry’s VP…
