WBUR’s Radio Boston is airing an interview with Fitchburg’s new mayor at 1pm (you may have seen her introducing Deval Patrick at the Obama rally on Monday). Should be interesting, particularly for folks in old mill towns.
Mayor Lisa Wong inherited a big job when she won Fitchburg’s mayoral election last year. An old mill town with closed factories, a crime problem and a record number of foreclosures are just some of her worries. The 28-year old Wong has a plan and Radio Boston heads to Fitchburg to find out what it is.

Couldn’t resist calling in, as the topic is SOOOO relevant to Lowell, especially this week (the GOB Strikes Back, what a mess!), but by the time they got to me, most of the points I wanted to make were well covered, which is a credit to the show really. It was a great one and hit all the highlights and issues that we’ve been facing.

p>I really like the Radio Boston format and the people they have on are all generally excellent. Kudos to them!
<
p>I really need to meet Mayor Lisa Wong, partly to network and commiserate as our cities’ situation are so similar, and partly because she seems like a really cool person to hang out with.

Bachelor’s (double major no less) and Master’s at BU in a total of three years, five years as the Exec. Dir. of the Fitchburg Redevelopment Authority, and now she’s mayor — at my age. What the hell have I been doing with my life?
<
p>On the other hand, while we don’t have a mayor in Watertown, I used to live in Waltham, and I don’t think I could picture Jeannette McCarthy inviting web-chat participants to hang out with her on Fridays at a local martini bar.
<
p>But I agree, it was an excellent program, and it sounds like there’s some real potential for a Fitchburg renaissance.

She’s very down-to-earth and approachable.
