UPDATE: Holy Moses. We got whupped, fair and square. Upset of the Millenium. Much, much respect to the Giants — they earned it, with guts of mythic proportions, marked by Tyree’s absolutely insane catch off his helmet.
Earned. My hat is off.

FURTHER UPDATE: IMHO, the funniest ad was the talking coffee stain. Really quite amusing. You can watch it here. The Bridgestone ad with the screaming squirrels was the second-best. They’re all posted here.
Predictions? Rants? Recipes?
In honor of the game’s setting in AZ, I’m making fake TexMex: Old El Paso tacos with seasoned beef. Good times. I’m stopping just short of crossing the border, baby. (And I’m drinking an effete Euro-beer to go along with it.)
Dude, if we didn’t tape the Giants’ walk-through yesterday, we’re toast! Game over, man!

Hey Charley, Holy Smokes did burn down last year (mysteriously, I don’t believe a cause was ever publicly identified), and it’s huge loss for western MA. But the owners are on the verge of resurrecting Holy Smokes as a mobile catering operation: http://holysmokesbbq.com/

p>No surprise that the Jints are pressuring up the middle, but I’m surprised at how successful they’ve been.
<
p>The hallmark of this Pats era has been an ability to make adjustments, and big plays in big games from Brady. It’s all on the table now.
<
p>I’d like to see them shorten up those pass routes and use Maroney more. Defense is doing their job, but man the Pats offense has to string some drives together.

Although I’m a Pats fan now by virtue of geography, I grew up going to Giants games at Yankee Stadium as a kid, and it was always cold, there were always drunk guys in the seats behind us yelling obscenities at the coach, Allie Sherman, and the Giants ALWAYS lost. So my disappointment tonight is tempered by a sense of vindication for those Sunday afternoons among the losers.

Very few “experts” gave them a chance, and most of the armchair knuckleheads (like me) didn’t think it would be close. Ahem.
Great game plan by the G-Men, better execution. A couple of plays down the stretch and the Pats had the win, but they couldn’t make them.

david says
I jinxed it. Sorry guys.
<
p>Seriously, I’m with Charley. The Giants played a much, much better game than the Patriots, and they deserved to win. Their pass rush was overwhelming — Brady had about one-fourth the time to make his throws that he’s had all season, and he got sacked and hit way more than usual. And, oddly, even when he had the time, he wasn’t as sharp as usual, so something’s up there as well. And, sorry Manning haters, but Eli was terrific. His 4th-quarter scramble where he somehow escaped about four Patriots, leading to the astounding head catch way downfield, was one of the craziest, most amazing plays I’ve ever seen.
bob-neer says
The Giants did not deserve to win. They got some huge breaks. Hello? Manning not sacked on the final drive? Hello? Tyree catching the ball on his head? Hello? Samuel just missing an interception? Those were great plays for the Giants, but they also were fortunate. The Patriots, for their part, did not play well only by their incomparable normal standards. Look at the stats. They fought hard all game. They never gave up except for the last second. The game easily could have gone to the Patriots — and almost did.
<
p>When the game is close, you should side always side with your own team. That’s just basic sports and common sense besides. Especially if, as in this case, the whole thing was your fault in the first place.
david says
I know you’re hurting right now, so it’s normal to lash out. It’s OK, I can take it. I feel your pain, believe me, I do. I won’t hold it against you.
<
p>But when you’ve come to your senses, and slept off the booze in which you’re no doubt drowning your sorrows, you’ll recognize that what I’m saying is true. All season long, the pattern has been that the Pats were so good that whenever the other side made a little slip-up, that was it — the Pats capitalized, and the game was over, especially because the Pats so rarely gave the other side similar opportunities. Not so in this game, and that’s why the Pats lost.
<
p>Did the Giants get some lucky breaks? Sure — to the extent that anything in a football game is “luck.” But that’s what separates winners from losers in sport. Winners create the circumstances in which lucky breaks can occur, and in which they can capitalize on them. That’s what the Pats have done all season; that’s what the Giants did today.
cadmium says
for me was that this was winnable. If it was a blowout it would be more acceptable. In the last quarter the Giants were exhausted. Those individual plays like letting Manning get away on the last series, the decision to go for fourth with long yardage – instead of field goal, the predictable hail mary passes on the last series etc.

but I’ve been saying for about the past 3-4 games that there’s something wrong with Brady. I’ve never seen him throw so many fluttering, dying quails, and passes that are over the receiver’s head, or nowehere near anyone. I’m wondering if he has a problem with his hand or shoulder.
<
p>Although I’m sure Belichick would have told us all imediately if there was a problem.
