Just FYI, I was on WBUR’s “Radio Boston” program on Friday afternoon to talk about the parallels between the Patrick and Obama campaigns. Other guests were the Phoenix’s Adam Reilly, GOP analyst Todd Domke, and the omnipresent Jeff Berry of Tufts University. You can listen to the show at this link.

David it was nice to hear you on Radio Boston. Unfortunately, you failed to address the gap between the fantastic rhetoric and reality. Blaming everything on the “Big Dig culture” on Beacon Hill doesn’t fly.
<
p>Drapes, a Cadillac, and casino gambling demonstrates a pattern. There is a disconnect between the words and deeds.
<
p>Gambling can bring about unintended consequences and prays on the least able to afford it. Shame!
<
p>People need to discuss the issue.
Rhetoric should match acts!

To gamble? Isn’t it environmentally friendly to support casino gambling in MA? đŸ˜‰
peabody says
Games of chance can be fun. But let’s not confuse a green issue with the reality of gambling.
<
p>Answer: There is no reason why people need to drive to Connecticut. That doesn’t make it right though.
<
p>An addiction to tax revenue can be as bad as an addiction to any compulsive behavior. I thank God I can play and then stop. Some People can’t and I am willing to bypass my good time for the sake of peoples’ lives and families.
<
p>Proposing this in a budget was just plain wrong!
gary says
<
p>Right! Same with booze, the scratch tickets, cigarettes. We ought to marginalize those bad things to CT also. For the children.
peabody says
I am far from a Puritan; but booze, scratch tickets, and cigarettes are already legal and freely available. We, as limited as Deval would like it, currently have a choice on casinos.
<
p>I did not say, “For the children. . .” But while you’re on it, maybe we should demonstrate some concern for all families.
<
p>I believe we need to discuss the ramifications of casino gambling. I didn’t try to ram this down the peoples’ throats via a budget item. Deval is trying to do that.
<
p>So the choice is draconian cuts in our state budget or casino gambling. Nice visionary thinking? The rhetoric needs to match the deeds!

This from Meet the Press transcript today:

p>The fact that in the same debate Clinton says Obama represents change you can Xerox and then in her very well crafted closing remarks lifts lines from her hubby and Edwards sums up the Clinton campaign in a nutshell. I really don’t care that she used lines similar to those used by Bill back in the day – they were good lines then and now. But, if you are gonna bitch about Obama on this than at least don’t in the same debate do essentially the same thing. But ultimately, I like a lot about Hillary and liked her last remarks at the debate. I just think Obama is a better candidate and that her campaign has let her down.

They are certainly alike in their moving towards higher ideals in their speeches. However, from the moment I first heard Patrick I expected that we’d get exactly what we’ve got from him.
<
p>Obama strikes me as “playing the game” in order to move government and society in the right direction.
<
p>Patrick, by contrast, seems to savor the game itself. It’s not clear to me that he actually wants to move anything but Patrick in the right direction.
<
p>I guess that time will tell us more about both men.
