There is also a vote coming in Mashpee as to a Wampanoag desire to create a Wampanoag reservation by putting land in trust, but with a restriction against a casino being put up on it:
MASHPEE – Voters will have their say on an agreement with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe at a special town meeting April 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mashpee High School auditorium.
Selectmen last night voted 3-0 with one abstention to hold the meeting.
In the agreement, approved by the tribal body last Sunday, the tribe promises not to build a Class II or Class III casino in Mashpee or seek any more private or town-owned land. In exchange, the town would promise to support the Wampanoag’s application to put 140 acres in Mashpee and 539 acres in Middleboro into federal trust.
The ability to seek to build and own a casino has surely not brought happiness or unity to the Mashpee Wampanoag – at least not yet.
