Time for Barrows to put up, or shut up
A herald article highlights criticism by Clyde Barrows of Rep. Dan Bosley. According the article
Barrow says the lawmaker offers no specific study or analysis to back up the claim that Massachusetts would not see any real financial gains from casino gambling.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Now I have read most of Bosley’s casino position papers, blogs, and so on. He can back up everything with a study or other evidence.
Don’t pick on my plan
By now we all know that Governor Patrick’s casino legislation is copied.. modeled after a Barrows paper. At each and every opportunity, the media wheel out supposed expert Barrows to tell us why casinos would be great for Massachusetts. There is one thing about each and every one of Barrows studies, statements, appearances, and media sound bites.
He never takes the costs into account. Like most pro-casino advocates, it’s all benefits and no costs. It is time for you Mr. Barrows to take a serious account of social costs into your tireless shilling for casinos. All I’ve ever seen from you is an upside analysis. That’s only half the picture. Mr. Bosely can show you a study to back up every assertion he makes.
People that live in glass casinos shouldn’t throw stones, Clyde. The fact that Bosley is trying to take costs into account(unlike you) doesn’t make your data wrong … it just shows it to be incomplete. Bosley is at least trying to do a cost/benefit analysis. All I’ve ever seen from you is a “benefit” analysis. This is why your position is widely questioned by those who have studied this issue. You’ve only done half of your homework. And where I went to school – that won’t earn you a “C” – it will earn you a “D”.

Bosley spin; Patrick spins.

p>Take a look at the Boston Fed study on casino. No gloom, no doom, but enough sound bites for either side of the debate to claim the high ground.
<
p>As Mr. Bosley’s analysis goes he argues his social points well, but his cost benefit analysis is frankly terrible and amateurish. Whether that’s a C or D or worse, YMMV.

ever fell for his crap is beyond me – and let’s be honest, all it is is crap. Counting license plates? Are you kidding me? Not one of Barrow’s studies should be taken as credible. It’s the reason why we need a true commission to study the issue from top to bottom, becauase people like Barrows are so flawed and biased, using methodology that’s horrid at best, that they’ve utterly failed this state. Keep in mind that Barrow gets a pay check (to shill for casinos) from UMASS Dartmouth, a public institution and my alma mata. For shame.
