Caucus day was quite a day for us. Four-and-a-half hours of caucusing in an amazing display of pure grassroots democracy was exhausting and exhilarating. The energy that came out of that room was something that we will all remember for a long time. We have so much respect for all the other candidates who came out, organized hard, worked the room, and were really an impressive group. It makes us feel so good about this district, from Somerville and Cambridge to Mattapan and Roxbury, to think about how many hard working progressive Democrats we have here. And the icing on the cake is that so many more couldn’t even be there this weekend, because they were down in Pennsylvania working the doors and phones for our man Obama.
We came into the event concerned that it could be a tremendously long day, with people cooped up in a room for hours, with no food or water, and we worried that they might leave. We were interested in helping along the process by skipping the speeches and providing refreshments. In retrospect, it was very clear that so many people were in the room for just one or two other people, and really appreciated the opportunity to learn about the candidates. We’re very pleased that ultimately that was accommodated. We have a huge amount of respect for the kinds of Democrats that want to know more about the people who are representing them. With that in mind, we want to welcome you to touch base with us with any questions or thoughts you might have about our coalition. Please feel free to email us at caucuscoalition08@gmail.com. We have a ton of admiration and respect for those who were willing to give up most of a Saturday to participate in this process.
We also would be remiss if we didn’t thank Congressman Capuano for his diligent work running a difficult caucus, and to his office, Councilor Sam Yoon’s office, and all the volunteers who spent all those hours counting and recounting ballots. Your efforts certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
We thank you again for your support, and don’t be shy about contacting us. We are going to Denver to represent you. Keep an eye out this summer, as we will try to pull together an event in the area designed to allow Obama supporters from the area to come together, to tell us their thoughts on the convention, on the presidential race, on the Democratic Party and democratic process, and to discuss how we as Massachusetts Democrats can make a difference come November – whoever our party’s nominee may be.
Thanks again.
City Councilor Mike Ross
