Barack Obama has finally been put on the record regarding same-sex marriage, and I think the vast majority of posters on this site are not going to like what he says. In an interview with Jake Tapper of ABC News Obama is asked point blank about same-sex marriage as the transcript shows.
TAPPER: OK, last one, and that is same-sex marriage is now going on in California.
OBAMA: Right.
TAPPER: You oppose same-sex marriage.
OBAMA: Yes.
TAPPER: Do you think that the fact that this is now going on in California, does that cause you to re-think your pledge to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act?
OBAMA: No. I still think that these are decisions that need to be made at a state and local level. I’m a strong supporter of civil unions. And I think that, you know, we’re involved in a national conversation about this issue.
You know, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, but I also think that same-sex partners should be able to visit each other in hospitals, they should be able to transfer property, they should be able to get the same federal rights and benefits that are conferred onto married couples.
And so, you know, as president, my job is to make sure that the federal government is not discriminating and that we maintain the federal government’s historic role in not meddling with what states are doing when it comes to marriage law. That’s what I’ll do as president.
Maybe the guy from the Lowell Convention can hold a sign during Obama’s speech. “Obama, Anti-Equality, Anti-American, Anti-Civil Rights”?

Is McCain for it? It is not yet the year to support marriage equality if you want to be elected.

based on the reaction of some people here to the forcefull ejection of a man exercising his first amendment rights at of all things a political convention, I think some people here would beg to differ.

The idea that McCain is a better choice for any group in this country other than old white men with lots of money is ludicrous. In the specific case of marriage, he opposes it for gay people. Here is the Baptist press on the issue:

He’s been on record for a while. It’s worth noting the first time (of many) this was discussed here was in Bob’s December 19th endorsement of Senator Obama.

p>Plus he says Obama wants to repeal DOMA. Does John McCain want to repeal DOMA and believe, as Obama does, “that same-sex partners should be able to visit each other in hospitals, they should be able to transfer property, they should be able to get the same federal rights and benefits that are conferred onto married couples”?

The rhetorical device of dismissing something as “old news” is one that I’ve recently learned from my teacher of rhetoric to use in arguments — along with you’re going to have a tough time convincing me and and you know it.

it would be nice if Democratic presidential candidates would stay ahead-of-the-curve on these issues

Funny how EaBo decided to leave off the the last question (even though it is still on topic.)

“does it bother you what florida and arizona are doing and 23 other states have done?” his old pro-slavery states-rights approach would indicate another answer of “no”. obama sanctions discrimination by the states. there is no sugar coating it.
