From State House News:
MARZILLI NOT SEEKING RE-ELECTION: Democratic state Sen. James Marzilli, who has been charged with attempted sexual assault and a string of other charges, will not re-election, he said in a statement Thursday. “My state house staff will continue to respond to the needs of constituents within the district until the end of my term,” he wrote. “Susan and I thank the many of you who have reached out with your love and kindness in the past few days and we ask for your continued good wishes and support during this very difficult time.” Marzilli did not address the charges stemming from an alleged incident in Lowell where prosecutors say he tried to grope a woman. Developing
This confuses me. It seems he won’t be showing up to work but his staff will continue constituent services and he won’t seek re-election. I think it is too late for him to take his name off the ballot.
Sounds like a reasonable approach, unless there’s reason to doubt that he might take some bold new approach on any substantive votes before the end of the session.

p>What a crazy, sad situation. I wonder how many women were victimized before the recent incidents? Based on the emerging details, I would say that it’s too bad someone in a relatively powerful position can get away with this stuff for so long before people believe (or are willing to report) the incidents. Until this morning, as the details and additional incidents hit the news, I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Does that make me an enabler?
Given that the papers were due for September already, it would create a really odd situation where someone could run and win in a special election and then not be on the ballot for the fall.
The last day and hour to fill a vacancy caused by a withdrawal (with a caucus) was JUNE 4, at 5 pm. However, the last day to withdraw was May 30, before all this broke.

p>(BTW – because Ogonowski is Federal, HE has until TOMORROW to formally withdraw…..)

p>So, it appears that the print shops north of Boston will have a nice busy time making stickers – and Marzilli WILL be on the ballot.
No stickers needed. Two other Democrats were already on the ballot.
…the ambitious may come out of the woodwork, arguing that THEY have better resumes than the ‘nobodies’ on the ballot. Those on the ballot will remonstrate about the polticial cowardice of such johnny-come-latelies. They may likely lose anyway, although they would be perfectly correct. It MAY be a busy primary season.
Ken Donelly raised $100,000.00 in six weeks and nearly won in the special election where Marzilli was elected.

quotes around ‘nobodies’ I think peter was using what a new challenger may think.
Porcupine in East Boston if the republicans win that seat….
Elected officials get a full year’s credit towards their pension for any part of a calendar year that they serve. So for example, Rep. Joe Smith gets sworn in on Jan. 1, 2007 and chooses not to run for re-election. His last day on the job is Jan. 1, 2009. He gets three years creditable service for his pension- 2007, 2008, and 2009.
If Marzilli resigned today, or on December 31, he wouldn’t get that extra year of service calculated into his pension.
This all assumes, however that Marzilli isn’t found guilty, and that his pension isn’t stripped, like Jackie Bulger….
