Why I Should Be Governor:I think I should be Governor of Massachusetts for Red Sox Nation because I embody the joy of being a Red Sox fan. I wear a hat that I had made for the 1999 All-Star Game. My hat is a replica of Fenway Park, with the Green Monster (before the seats went on top), and lights and a Citgo sign that illuminate. I wear this hat to all the games I attend (40 or more home games and 5-10 road games per year). In addition to my hat, I wear many other items that show my love for the Sox. Fans call out to me and ask to take their picture with me many times at every game. Rarely does anyone pass by me without smiling or pointing. I love that I am able to share my love for the Sox with so many people.
And that is what I think Red Sox Nation is really about – sharing your love of the team and the shared experience of, in the words of the late great Jim McKay, “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” These common bonds are what make any nation strong.

p>Last year, a friend of mine was in the contest for President of Red Sox Nation. He campaigned actively and had the support of a number of Red Sox message board junkies, as did another candidate, an Iraq veteran. People voted early and often (you could vote multiple times) for them, but they were eliminated from the final nine, in favor of such luminaries as Doris Kearns Goodwin, Mike Barnicle, ex-Sox player Sam Horn, and a dog(!) Big Pupi. As most know, the winner was Jerry Remy, rather than a “real fan”. So most people I know are avoiding this one like the plague, even though some very worthy people may be running.

Got an e-mail from the Pawtucket Red Sox asking people to vote for their mascot as the “Rhode Island” Governor. Fair fight for fans?
Vegetable, Animal or Mineral? Another reason to avoid this election like the plague or another reason to suspect that Rhode Island Members of Red Sox Nation are desperate for a legitimate candidate?
although as noted, a number of people aren’t playing that game this year, having been “Remy’d” last year, so it’s possible.
