I use a fake email and it allows me to receive emails in my normal inbox from fellow BMGers without giving up my identity or my private email. I’ve never received spam or harassment. And only four people have contacted me, so it’s not like I’m bombarded with unwanted communications. I always have the option of ignoring unwanted emails, I can always un-publish my fake email, and if I decide to leave BMG, I can stop my fake email from forwarding to my main account or deactivate the fake account entirely.
I can understand not wanting to put a real email address on BMG and I can understand not wanting to have any email on BMG. It’s not a big deal if you do or you don’t post one. But I think you have nothing to lose and more to gain by publishing an email than not publishing one and encourage you to try it out. I think, even if only in a small way, it nurtures this community and creates opportunities to learn more about the people behind the screen name and ideology.

PS – If you still have questions about setting up or forwarding from a dummy email account, post a comment and I’m sure I or someone else can help you.

I did change the word “dot” into it as I was getting a spam uptick to that account.

Been thinking about that for a while but I didn’t feel like creating yet another email account to check. So what I did is configure it to forward to the account I use most often.

p>1108 just happens to be the time it was when I created it. Amazing how many combinations are already taken.

…I’m hoping to renew “Better Know a BMGer” this month, and an email is the only way I can get in touch with you.

I was thnking of that this weekend as I wanted to write off-line to people I knew, or those who were writing about Lori. It’s an excellent suggestion and a way of building community. Kate

I can be contacted at the email address I just posted on my profile (very basic codebreaking skills required) or simply by–SHAMELESS PLUG WARNING–visiting me at my blog, Someday I Will.
