I continue to be astounded at how dreadful the Republican sense of humor is. Is there anything funny in that, at all, other than suggestions of a naughty word?

You really don’t think it’s funny? I don’t know what to tell you. I think this is absolutely hilarious. For the record I’d think a mash up with Mitt Romney saying the same thing about McCain would be hillarious as well.
<
p>One of the funniest bits ever done at the Improv Asylum was a gay love song to Mitt Romney by Brian Gallivan, who is now on the Main Stage at Second City in Chicago.
<
p>I can laugh when they make fun of Republican’s you seem to not be able to do the same.
Have you even watched the Daily Show segments that tblade posted? They’re hilarious, and they totally skewer the Obama/Messiah connection. The difference between that and this, and that weak Times column, is that Stewart is actually funny. Because he’s a professional comedian who employs professional writers, and they’re all very good at their jobs.
<
p>This is something that I always find amusing — people who just assume that anyone can do comedy. It’s a skill like any other. Some folks got it, some folks don’t.
eaboclippersays
The Daily Show piece was not about the Obama is Messiah thought process. It was about “Obama Magic Pants and his Quest for the Ring” it was a reference to Lord of the Rings, not an allegory to Christ and his life. The Stewart piece basically made fun of Conservative and their reaction to Obama, not Obama himself. Watch it again David, that’s why you find it funny.
<
p>As a trained improviser I understand comedy David. All good comedy as Chana Halpern, and Del Close postulate in their book, Truth in Comedy: The Manual of Improvisation, lies in truth or at least how one sees truth. You and I have a completely different world view. You don’t buy into the Obama is the Messiah meme, so you don’t think a Christian Allegory as satire about Obama is funny. I who truly believes you all are suffering from some kind of unhealthy hero worship do see the truth of that situation, and therefore it is funny.
<
p>So yes I watched the Stewart piece it was mildly amusing. The Times of London piece was witty and cleverly written. I mean come on “King Bill the Priapic” that is comedy gold.

…the Lord of the Rings is steeped in Christian ethos?
<
p>Tolkien said in a letter:
<
p>
The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work, unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision. That is why I have not put in, or have cut out, practically all references to anything like “religion”, to cults or practices, in the Imaginary world. For the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism
<
p>So your attempt to explain away Stewart’s take as non-Messianic only strengthens David’s point.
<
p>Sometimes, Eabo (actually quite often here at BMG), your attempts to explain yourself and clarify your positions just make your points look all the more silly. Learn to quit when you’re ahead not that far behind.
EaBoClipper — master of all things artistic, scientific, and literary. (Did I leave anything out?) It’s remarkable how most of the conservatives on this site are universally talented, at least by their own accounts. Now that’s comedy!! đŸ˜‰
<
p>With respect to Stewart, obviously you missed his line about Obama’s stopping in Bethlehem to visit the manger where he was born. If that’s not “an allegory to Christ and his life,” I don’t know what is, and it was one of his best lines. Plus, you, of course, are assuming that the Messiah thing has to be about Jesus. You may (or may not, I don’t know or care) believe Jesus to be the Messiah, but that belief is not universally shared.
