The late news reported this evening that Senator Kennedy made a brief trip to Capitol Hill today to vote on Medicare legislation. This first appearance on the Senate floor since being diagnosed with brain cancer was a surprise to almost everyone and greeted by his colleagues with resounding applause. It was a decisive vote for achieving a majority, but apparently when the outcome was clear enough Republicans voted in favor to make the margin veto-proof.

Bills such as this have an awful lot more to do with rising health care costs than do the trinkers handed out by drug companies.
