It’s our annual open house weekend for the Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society at our locomotive and combine, located right in the middle of everything in downtown Lowell, opposite the stage at Kennedy Plaza.
<
p>It’s incredible how many people come out for the festival from all over, and it’s great to be a part of it every year.

I knew earlier. We went through the rail car. You may have met the charming older man who came with us. Nice history poster presentations on the walls—reminder of when the railroad barons ruled.

Wonderful mix of families, old and young. Kids with parents, kids with grandparents, young couples, older couples, even a few teenagers. Also interesting to see a good ethnic mix, especially among the families with kids.
<
p>The young kids are almost all fascinated by our model trains. Some of these kids would have stayed there all day if their parents had let them.
<
p>For some of the older folks, the trains bring back childhood memories, of relatives who worked for the railroad or the trains of their childhood home towns.
<
p>Interesting how many people need to be reintroduced to the trains in their own communities. We had timetables for both the North Side commuter rail and the Downeaster between Boston and Portland; one of our members was showing people how they could take the train to get into Boston or to go to Maine.

Not as well attended as I remember. I haven’t been in a few years. There were a lot less ethnic food booths as well, which was odd to me. It’s still a good take though. I had the fried chicken from teh NAACP booth and it was good as always.
<
p>One thing that was somewhat annoying is that a bunch of the drink signs were printed on Moxie banners and they HAD NO MOXIE, seeing as it was invented in Lowell (by a Arlington Native who moved here) you’d think they’d have it.
cadmium says
Seeing those signs I just assumed they had Moxie. The Armenian burgers are still awesome. We had some beers at JFK in the afternoon after a hot dry walk from Boarding House Park that really hit the spot
<
p>I thought the crowd picked up a lot late in the day. The morning looked a little sparse, but the afternoon and evening it seemed pretty busy. I think it was a little more spread out too.
<
p>Left before the parade.

Lynne – Duh – I don’t know why I got it in my head that the festival was next weekend and am so badly double scheduled.
<
p>What are the dates for NEXT year and I will put them in my computer to nag me [I mean remind me] so I calendar the Lowell Festival Weekend and keep it clear in 2009!!!
eaboclipper says
ALWAYS the last full weekend in July. Always, has been for 22 years.

It was a good time tonight, and sorry I missed you! I was impressed by the lineup.
