Amtrak foreman and office manager wife give McCain $61K

Others mentioned this in Joel’s post, but I think it is worth highlighting:

Alice Rocchio is an office manager at the New York headquarters of the Hess Corp., drives a 1993 Chevy Cavalier and lives in an apartment in Queens, N.Y., with her husband, Pasquale, an Amtrak foreman.

Despite what appears to be a middle-class lifestyle, the couple has written $61,600 in checks to John McCain’s presidential campaign and the Republican National Committee, most of it within days of McCain’s decision to endorse offshore oil drilling.

That’s dedication to a cause! These people must really love McCain if they have $61,000 to just throw into a campaign. Any one else here ever donate $61K to your presidential candidate in one year?

    • To be clear, the number to which I refer is sixty one thousand dollars. Or 61 x 10^3 dollars.  

  2. It was my understaning that you could give a maixmum of $4600 to a candidate per cycle lets see times 2 people that would be $9200.00. Then you could contribute to the RNC not to the candidate $25,000 each times two is $50,000. my math although maybe suspect since the FEC site does not actually give you the amounts on one page suggests a total for a couple of 59,200.00. I sure hope the wringkley old white hair man returns the rest to those nice folks.

        p>The article I quoted raises questions about possible violations of federal election law on the part of McCain’s bundler, while your link raises no such thing about Obama and points out that hedge fund managers are donating to both candidates – perhaps they’re hedging their bets?

Because what is implied in the Times article about Obama is no where near as  embarrassing – let alone criminal – as what is implied about McCain. McCain getting $61K from an admin from Hess Oil and her husband at the same time McCain came out for drilling and getting thousands of dollars from people who don’t remember why they donated to the campaign is not in the same league as your link on Obama. Consider this guy from the WaPo article:

    Some of the most prolific givers in Sargeant’s network live in modest homes in Southern California’s Inland Empire. Most had never given a political contribution before being contacted by Sargeant or his associates. Most said they have never voiced much interest in politics. And in several instances, they had never registered to vote. And yet, records show, some families have ponied up as much as $18,400 for various candidates between December and March.

    Both Sargeant and the donors were vague when asked to explain how Sargeant persuaded them to give away so much money.

    Read the whole thing!  Especially at the end where the donors try to explain how come they donated so much money even though they don’t remember who asked them to support John McCain!
