Del Martin, long time lesbian activist, passed away this morning at the age of 87. Her accomplishments were many. Most recently she and her lifetime partner Phyllis Lyon were plaintiffs in the case that brought same sex marriage to the state of California. The two women were wed on June 16 (after 55 years together) in the first legal same sex marriage ceremony performed in San Francisco which was officiated by Gavin Newsom. While her passing is sad, it is comforting to know that she was able to experience the joy of marriage in her final days. May she rest in peace.

An excellent obituary can be read here. It is no exaggeration to say that the work of Del & Phyllis made it possible for me to live my life openly and honestly. My heart goes out to the Martin-Lyons family.
