Live from Invesco field — here’s the alleged “Barackopolis”

August 28, 2008 By David

After walking through a very, very long line (which actually moved pretty well) I’ve made my way into Invesco field.  At the moment I am blogging from a blogger area which is in the glassed-in press box way above the field.  I have an excellent view of the “Greek columns” that seem to have created such a hubbub, with Team McCain deriding the structure as “the Temple of Obama” and “the Barackopolis” (the latter is actually quite funny).  Here they are.

I mean, for God’s sake.  What is the big deal?  It looks vaguely like the White House, vaguely like the Capitol, vaguely like the Supreme Court.  That, obviously, is the point.  This “Barackopolis” nonsense, while witty, isn’t anything more than the media mindlessly parroting McCain talking points.  There’s been a lot of that lately.  It needs to stop.

UPDATE: Here is another view, taken by Bob who is down on the floor with the Mass. delegation.

….or built by the media types for the occasion?  I was involved in theater for a while, so was just curious as to whether this white and blue with columns was a regular part of the stadium structure or a media-driven set.

that “-opolis” is actually “City of” and nothing to do with temples.

p>But don’t expect the McCain camp or its supporters to care about snark that actually points to real things. Making it up is OKIYAR.

I’ve had this issue on my work computer a while now. At home, I can see them on that desktop.

p>I tried a couple of the suggestions from Flickr itself with no success.

p>I can always go to the flickr page and “download the large version” a pain in the neck but it works.

I find the animated images on the right margin really annoying, and I can’t figure out how to AdBlock them.

            <

            p>Go figure.

My workplace does the same thing to certain sites – some of the ads at rawstory are served from a blocked site, so when I go there I sometimes see two or three “you have accessed a blocked site” messages.  Rather than continue to show up on the blocked site report, I only visit rawstory from home.

that bush is standing on the eagle’s cloaca.  it’s all so fitting – his advertising consultants did him proud.

I’ve always thought it was completely obvious that the set — considering what today is the 45th anniversary of, and which state a certain tall, thin president and a certain tall, thin candidate both come from — was meant primarily as an allusion to the Lincoln Monument.
