that’s a big surprise. Who would have guessed THAT? When the Globe endorses McCain or if the Herald had endorsed Obama, then there’d be something to write about.

Boston Herald:
Another sobering start to an exceedingly sobering week – but one which points to the need for a political leader who is steady in the face of crisis, mature in judgment and able to reach across the aisle to break the gridlock that has for too long gripped Washington.
Our economy, I think, is still — the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times.
<
p>
And my opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals — the American worker and their innovation, their entrepreneurship, the small business, those are the fundamentals of America, and I think they’re strong.
<
p>
The fundamentals of our economy are at risk…. And those fundamentals are threatened, they are threatened and at risk because some on Wall Street have treated Wall Street like a casino.
<
p>It sounds to me as if John McCain doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Good Lord, what planet are the Herald’s editors living on? Don’t they read the Wall Street Journal?
<
p>
In a crisis, voters want steady, calm leadership, not easy, misleading answers that will do nothing to help. Mr. McCain is sounding like a candidate searching for a political foil rather than a genuine solution.
<
p>Or George Will, the reasonable conservative’s reasonable conservative?
<
p>
Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high. It is not Barack Obama…. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency…. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?
<
p>In looking for words to describe McCain’s behavior over the last couple of weeks (i.e., in a crisis), “steady” should be one of the last that would spring to mind.
