I don’t think the interview was over the line. Neither does CNN. And neither do most of you who e-mailed me this week. Thank you, all of you who e-mailed me, including those who disagree. We’re always interested in getting past talking points and exploring the issues in any political interview.
You have a right to know the people you are voting for. Our pledge to you on this program is to ask the tough but fair questions and to try to get answers.
My hat’s off to Campbell Brown and CNN with the hope that we see more of this – with all of the candidates.
Please share widely!

Even Chris Wallace and (gasp) Alan Colmes seemed to have awoken over the last couple of weeks – I think the leadership at Faux News has sensed the public mood and they’re trying to remain relevant. I’m certainly heartened to see an awakening at CNN…

What cable station continues to kick the ASS of every other channel… FOX! Why did BO go there with the other BO (Bill O’Rielly)… because they have so many viewers.
bean-in-the-burbs says
I practically puked yesterday morning when the once-reliable NPR chose to reference McCain and air a little piece on the origins of the word “maverick” …
johnd says
Where has journalism gone? And NPR said something positive about Republicans… HOW DID THAT HAPPEN??? Did someone infiltrate the granola earthy crunchy Cambridge crowd when the back door was left open for some chain smoker (like Barack Obama) to get the smokers high?
<
p>Once-reliable NPR… are freaking for real?????
kbusch says
Um, JohnD, the talking point is that your side is against sexism.
<
p>Please review your script.
johnd says
There are plenty of profane and vulgar words which don’t boil down to an “ism” as well. And we are against sexism but your party is the one taking ten steps backwards in the cause for women.
kbusch says
You really have no idea what you’re talking about here. I write this so often that I can now add — as usual.

kathy says
especially Hillary Clinton. But heaven forbid Palin is labeled one, and all of the sudden, it’s the Democrats who are sexist.
johnd says
As for Hillary, if the shoe fit… So, exactly why is Sarah a bitch? Maybe Republicans do have the same problem with their criticism of women but I’m glad this election has shown that Republicans don’t have a monopoly on it. Democrats are the ones that “pride” themselves on gender issues and removing any ceilings for women. We can call the Republicans bad for doing but the Democrats will be labeled as bad AND hypocrites!
christopher says
It certainly has overtones that are gender-specific. Besides, whether or not it is sexist it is still appalling vulgar. That kind of name calling has no place here. You know, I am wondering more and more whether your tag line “Can’t we all just get along? was intended to be ironic. The implication of most of your posts and comments clearly seems to be that you’re not interested in getting along.
johnd says
I have no problem with the word being called vulgar, but I simply am saying I don’t consider it Sexist.
<
p>And Christopher, through all this BS form both sides, can’t we still have some fun? When I watch videos of Daily Show making fun of McCain… I laugh my ass off. It’s funny. So I was making fun of Andrea Mitchell, BIG DEAL!
<
p>My tag line IS sarcastic!!! But it is NOT exclusive of getting along. If Mary Matlin and James Carville can remained married with their differing opinions, can’t bloggers here voice their disagreements, complete with colorful remarks, hateful rants, distortions and lies… just like the candidates get along shaking hands before and after every debate. Don’t get caught up with the simple naive notion held by many Democrats of being the party of inclusion (as long as you agree with them) or of being tolerant of other people’s views (as long as they like your views). They don’t mind communists, anarchists, atheists, illegal immigrants, ex-cons, UFO sighters, terrorists, separatist, militants and crooked/immoral politicians (B. Clinton, W. Jefferson, B. Frank, G. Studs…) BUT they have no patience for the likes of me. All they want from me is my MONEY and a disproportionate share to boot!
bean-in-the-burbs says
Let me explain it.
<
p>The maverick label is just spin when applied to John McCain, now that he has voted to allow the CIA to torture people, wants to make the fiscally irresponsible Bush tax giveaway to the wealthy permanent, repudiated his own immigration bill, capitulated to the religious nut jobs in picking his running mate, and is peddling the lie that she’s an anti-pork reformer.
<
p>The problem with NPR using the “maverick” label in relation to McCain isn’t that they’ve said something nice about a Republican, it’s that they’ve parroted something untrue that Republican spin-meisters would like middle America to believe. McCain has sold out on the few minor points of independence he once could claim. He’s just another mouthpiece of the corrupt interests that have held sway over the national Republican party for decades now.
<
p>I don’t expect any better of the Republican party; I’m old enough to remember the Willie Horton ad. But I expect better of NPR, which has been a small beacon of journalistic quality on the airwaves in the era of shock jocks and infotainment.
<
p>Incidentally, maverick originally referred to an unbranded cow – again quite unlike McCain, who’s sporting the brands of the oil and gas industry, the military-industrial complex and the religious right now.

I received some great advice from someone years ago, and I can’t even remember who gave it to me. The advice was this:
<
p>Once you start swearing, people stop listening.
<
p>I’ve internalized this as Once you start swearing, people will only notice that you are swearing and will no longer pay attention to what you are talking about. Substitute “shouting” for “swearing” and it’s just as true.
<
p>Notice how that happened here?
<
p>Just food for thought in future posts. If you want people to get your message, avoid doing things that distract from the message.
