I don’t get what Senator McCain is up to. Here’s the sequence of events as I see it.
1. Sen. McCain seeks to postpone the debate so he can return to Washington to help reach a deal on the bailout.
2. Sen. McCain returns to Washington but fails to support the plan the Congressional leadership had reached with the Administration, thus failing to give the House Republicans the political cover or leadership they probably think they need to vote for the plan.
3. Sen. McCain then announces that the debate is back on. So he’ll be leaving Washington for Mississippi sometime today.
4. There’s still no agreement on a deal.
Why on earth would he stay in Washington just long enough to throw a monkey wrench into the works, only to leave before a deal is reached?

gotchas backfire. First Palin, now his failed grand display of enabling the government to interfere in the “free” market.

In a way I even think that some of the erratic behavior is deliberately throwing a monkey-wrench into the news cycle. Maybe even (my inner conspiracy theorist) partially intended to lower expectations before the debate.
