The debate over Question 3 hit a new low today when dog track supporters tried to discredit video footage of deadly greyhound injuries that occured last year at Massachusetts dog tracks.
In a letter in this morning’s MetroWest Daily News, national dog racing lobbyist Gary Guccione of the Kansas-based American Greyhound Council, criticized the Daily News for reporting on the footage, and claimed:
“It is also disingenuous to suggest that a collection of video clips from dates and places unknown comprises reliable evidence of anything.”
The problem with this claim? The footage was taken last year at Raynham Park.
In fact, the footage contains a date stamp and racetrack brand that was produced by the track itself. Dog track owner George Carney was even interviewed when the story was first reported and did not dispute the origin of the footage, nor did he deny that greyhounds die due to serious injuries in our state. Instead, he claimed:
“Dog racing it’s like anything else. Dogs can be hit by cars. There’s nothing you can do about it.”
Voters deserve a fair debate on Question 3. We are committed to making our case based on provable facts about the tracks in our state, and believe that there is no place in this debate for misrepresentation, exaggeration or hyperbole.
