A YES VOTE would replace the criminal penalties for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana with a new system of civil penalties.
A NO VOTE would make no change in state criminal laws concerning possession of marijuana.

A recent Boston Globe article claimed the Proposition 2 effort to reduce the penalty for possession of one ounce or less of pot is being led by “limosine liberals.” It also claims, contrary to evidence, that if the effort is successful it will lead to an influx of “pushers” into the state.

p>As the driver of a beaten up truck who – poor me – has never been inside a limosine, I wholeheartedly support Proposition 2. Let’s be pragmatic here. Why would the state waste money on arresting and prosecuting folks and then, as a result of that system, on assigning many of them court-appointed attorneys so they can defend themselves? I would understand if there were something to protect the public from but….a small bag of weed?
<
p>Our current law does not protect anyone from anything and it does not curb marijuana use. All it does is waste resources. When New York state put into place regulations close to those outlined in Proposition 2, there was no increase in comsumption or crime, and caravans of pushers did not slip through the darkness of knight to undermine public health or sanity.

p>Anyway, thanks to everyone who worked to get Proposition 2 on the ballot. I’m hoping we act intelligently next Tuesday.
