Very, very sad news about our differently-winged friend Dean Barnett, about whom I wrote here during what turned out to be his final illness. He was 41.
Our condolences to Dean’s friends and family. His steady, reasoned voice — and his “thick-as-chowdah accent” — will be greatly missed.
Addendum, by Charley: This is really shocking. I met Dean at NECN, when we did a NewsNight show together. Dean was friendly and funny, and we had a great time on the show. I asked him a friendly but pointed question about Mitt Romney, and Dean actually did a valiant job at defending his guy. Would that there were more public conservatives like him.

I read his stuff mostly on Hugh Hewitt’s blog, and he was a great writer. We were both on some message boards for the Romney campaign, and he was a true blue supporter.

p>Thank you for the mention, David – very ‘BMG’ of you.

I was introduced to Dean through a mutual friend a few years ago and had the pleasure to get to know him. Like many people vow to do when they find they have a short time left on this earth, Dean lived every day as if it might be his last. Except he did it for 41 years. It was amazing to watch.

p>His illness gave him a perspective we could all learn from. He knew enough not to take himself or the causes he trumpeted too seriously. I will miss him terribly.
