This morning, the Committee to Protect Dogs launched our first television ad in support of Question 3, the Greyhound Protection Act. If passed, this humane proposal will phase out greyhound racing by 2010.
Since the beginning, this has always been a fight between our people and the dog track’s money and muscle. This first ad highlights our grassroots support, and gives a voice to Yes on 3 volunteers from across the state. It also features Carter Luke, President of MSPCA-Angell.
We are optimistic that once citizens hear our message of common sense and compassion, they will vote YES for the dogs on Question 3.
Please share widely!
Clear message, good visuals, the works.
With no answer. Credible or otherwise. Yes, I like greyhound racing. It is a beutiful thing to watch. Again, my question: What will happen to the dogs that you supposedly rescue? No disrespected intended at all. I’m serious.
If you watch a lot of dog races, you probably know that the vast majority of dogs that are currently racing were bred and trained elsewhere. They race here for a short period of time, and then go on to race at tracks in other states.
<
p>This process will continue through the phase out period. Hopefully, a significant number of dogs will be made available for adoption. We are committed to making sure every dog that is made available finds a loving home.
<
p>Incidentally, I am personally committed to adoping another greyhound after Question 3 passes. Would you like to join me and make a similar commitment? đŸ˜‰
As I am sure you know, the dogs are not owned by the tracks. Most dogs who race here were not bred here nor owned locally. My own greyhound came from West Virginia, was shipped to NH, and eventually ended up in a MA greyhound rescue after he washed out from racing.
<
p>What will happen to the dogs is pretty much the same as what happens after they finish racing at the existing tracks: some will be kept by their owners, some will be bred, some will be raced in other states, and some will be given up for adoption. Presumably, more greyhounds will come up for adoption during this period, but since MA is a net importer of dogs, and since greyhounds make such great pets, they are likely to be adopted.
Is that Greyhound racing in New England is kind of like the low minor leagues. I would worry about finding so many homes for placement. Unfortuanately my health issues would not be conducive to adopting one myself. REGAP does great work, and if 3 passes I would reccommend adppting a greyhound to anyone. They make wonderful pets and companions.
