Acceptance of bad conduct of some political persons because they are on the right side of some issues compromises our ideals. Also, it is shortsighted.
No Pollyanna here, but it is outrageous for Jesse Jackson Jr., if he is Candidate 5, to dismiss this as just another effort to win the seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. See Washington Post article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/…
It isn’t worth going into what passes for acceptable conduct on Beacon Hill.

I think it’s inaccurate to conflate the actions of Marzilli with the alleged actions of the others. Marzilli suffered a personal failing, not one of corruption related to his public office. Unlike the others, Marzilli’s action shouldn’t reflect on Beacon Hill.
<
p>As for Jesse Jackson, Jr., I’m leaving it to Fitzgerald to make the accusations. The only evidence we have of his wrongdoing is the word of Blagojevich, who we already know to be a corrupt liar. Maybe Blago was bluffing as part of a strategy to extract money from others. Or maybe it was something else. But we don’t know.

<
p>I don’t know what you’re referring to when you refer to Jackson’s “dismissal.” Dismiss what as just another effort? I read the article you linked to but can’t figure out what you meant.

It is noble of you to stick up for Jesse Jackson Jr. and Marzilli. But you don’t address the substance of what I proffer: Bad behavior is unacceptable.
<
p>Dismiss or play it off, I’m glad the reporters didn’t laugh when Jackson tried to dismiss, yes dismiss, it with a joke.
<
p>Maybe the press will grow a spine!?!

I didn’t stick up for anyone. What Marzilli did was obviously wrong, and I didn’t defend it at all. My point was that it was a different kind of failing than the ethical failings of the others.
<
p>I also didn’t deny that Jackson dismissed anything. I merely asked what you were accusing him of dismissing. I still don’t know.
peabody says
Dismissing that bad conduct is unacceptable. (i.e. selling or buying a U.S. Seante seat).
<
p>Jesse Jackson Jr. and his staff or emissaries should have known better. Being involved in this unsavory business, even by proxy, just demonstrates how unsuitable someone is for the U.S. Senate.
<
p>My bet is that Jesse Jackson Jr. is therefore a shoe-in!

I guess we should be grateful for the politicians we have and not be so presumtuous to aspire for better.

p>Excusing bad behavior is symptomatic of the problem. You must live in Arlington or close to Marzilli’s district.
