roberts’ flubb set up obama for more “he’s not really president/eligible” crowd to natter on.
I think Obama looked grim not because of the joke about Roberts — who is a fairly wretched individual under the best of circumstances, and made a complete ass of himself yesterday in front of millions of people, let’s be frank — but because this was a very serious moment for his White House staff and he didn’t want anything to take away from it. He’s also not really in a laughing mood these days: the country’s economy in dire straits, blood of people who have been tortured on our hands — yours, mine, every American’s — the environment in trouble. That’s my guess.
that, even though the screw-up was Roberts’ fault (there’s an NYT op-ed, amusingly entitled “Oaf of Office,” on why it might have happened), it did make Obama look awkward and uncertain at what should have been a perfect moment. So he’s probably not all that psyched to be reminded of it in front of his staff.

I thought it was kind of strange that a guy like Obama who is so damn good at speeches couldn’t repeat the sentence after Justice Roberts said it correctly the first time. Obama said 2 words and stopped, implying that he needed it repeated for him. That is when Justice Roberts made the mistake but had Obama simply repeated the line it would have gone flawlessly. I don’t think it’s a big thing for either Roberts or Obama but I think it only fair to mention this since nobody else has. PS I have nothing but respect for Justice Roberts. The only person to make an ass of himself was Biden and I think his attitude and big mouth will be a source of indigestion for Obama as he tries to bring things together.
“…implying that he needed it repeated for him.” Sorry… no go. It was obvious that he stopped because he knew something was wrong about what Roberts had said. He was more probably giving a moment for Roberts to correct himself. When it didn’t happen right away, Obama then repeated what Roberts had (erroneously) said at the same time that Roberts figured it out and was stammering to correct it.
Roberts screwed up the oath the first time he said it. I suspect that Obama paused because he realized that Roberts had made a mistake, and he was not sure whether he should repeat Roberts’ error (thereby not accurately stating the constitutional oath), or say the oath correctly (thereby not exactly repeating what Roberts said).
<
p>The whole thing was John Roberts’ fault. Sorry, but that’s the fact. The guy should be (and, I have no doubt, is) very embarrassed about it. His first time out on the big stage, and he blew his lines.

In fact, on viewing the swearing in again, I think the pause from Obama was a sign that even he knew that Justice Roberts made a mistake.

Justice Roberts said, “”I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear [pause] that I will execute the Office of the President faithfully.”
The oath is supposed to read, “I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of the President.”
<
p>So I apologize for pulling a Geitner (making an “innocent” mistake).
In all likelihood, this is the thing that Roberts will be best known for in the future. Quite fairly, he will henceforth be known as the person who couldn’t manage to read a simple sentence from a book in front of him.

John Roberts will be the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for the next 25 years and will administer the correct oath at the next 8 Presidential inaugurations. His mistake administering this one will be forgotten by most people by this time next week.

“the next 8 Presidential inaugurations” will take 32 years. Roberts will have trouble doing the last two if he’s CJ for only 25.
The next time Roberts administers the oath, the TVs will show countless replays of his screw-up, and will wonder breathlessly whether he will screw it up again, and will look carefully for evidence that he wrote it down this time.

The liberal elite television networks will all be boycotting Sarah Palin’s inauguration.
Actually, that was the problem. Roberts, like many Supreme Court litigators, prided himself in his pre-judge days of arguing before the Supreme Court without notes. He no doubt figured that if he could manage a 30-minute grueling argument with tough questions being fired at him from all sides without notes, he could handle a 10-second oath of office. So he didn’t write it down — he tried to do it from memory. That, as it turns out, was a big boo-boo.
… of teaching people to play the triangle while they are thinking to themselves “How hard could this be?… I mean, it’s a fricken triangle.” All you have to do is hit it in the playing spot. Everyone that can pick up a pencil and write should be able to do that, right? I always show them to hold the triangle between your head and the conductor so you can see both the baton and your instrument. You’d be surprised how many people ignore this advice and then miss. Same thing with finger cymbals.

Pulling a Roberts might be more of a stupid mistake (do you think he would do that intentionally in front of the World?) vs. pulling a Geitner which is something you do for 4 years in a row, then get caught for the last 2 years but hope everyone will miss that you did it the previous 2 years then get nominated to be Sec. of the Treasury so you hurry up and pay for those 2 years… (Question… will the IRS be allowing every other US citizen to use this “innocent” mistake excuse if we get audited and they find errors… “I didn’t know I couldn’t deduct Golf greens fees as Adult day care… it was an innocent mistake…”)

p>So my error, with the obviously available proof showing I was wrong (which I admitted to) was probably more like pulling a Roberts so thanks for the qualification request.
