The Sunday Herald's Peter Gelzinis quotes Gladys Vega of the Chelsea Collaborative:
“I tell people that they are not alone in this city,” Gladys said, “Chelsea is ready to help. People are willing to come together and work together. I see it every day.” “What I say to people all the time is that you don’t have to be a citizen to be part of a democracy,” said the petite dynamo who leads this community service organization, “but you must become involved and engaged in this community.“For example, you may not be able to vote,” she said, “but you can volunteer to drive people to the polls, or make phone calls, or knock on doors. Do something to become engaged. That’s what we are all about, civic engagement.”

p>What people need is a chance to get paid for hard work, period.

p>I do also read the Herald because often, like this, there is the willingness to talk about ordinary lives, not just the pontifications from “stakeholders” that I admit I often cannot read all the way through any more.
