The House, this afternoon, approved this measure 126-19 so i hereby rescind this post! đŸ™‚
My post from January on the Senate rejecting the proposed creation of an Independent Resdistricting Panel received alot of attention and generated some good and healthy debate.
Well, it appears that the House will soon do the same thing as the Senate, and toss the idea in a trash can.
From State House News Service:
HOUSE CHAIR TO OPPOSE INDEPENDENT REDISRICTING COMMISSION
Election Laws Committee co-chair Rep. Michael Moran urged his colleagues Wednesday to reject the creation of a special commission charged with redrawing legislative districts, arguing that lawmakers were entrusted by their constituents to make the decision themselves. Moran told the News Service that during a Democratic caucus, he questioned why a 200-member body should “cede” the once-a-decade task of redistricting to an unelected seven-member panel. He plans to lead debate on the House floor Thursday afternoon in favor of a legislative commission, which the Senate supports. House Minority Leader Bradley Jones said he will offer the amendment for an outside commission to “try to take it out of the political realm as much as possible.” He noted that lawmakers have the final say on any plans drawn up by a separate commission.
