BMG has been upgraded to the latest version of the soapblox code. At the same time, we’ve been moved to new servers hosted by Warecorp, which will soon host the entire Soapblox network. This should provide improved up-time, better security, and better technical support, since now it’s not just Paul taking care of things.
On the software side, the biggest change is that URLs for user IDs and posts now look like this:
User ID: www.bluemassgroup.com/user/YourName
Post: www.bluemassgroup.com/diary/###/title-of-post
(Yes, I know. We don’t call them “diaries.” Can’t have everything. Also, the old-style URLs will still work for links to old posts.)
This strikes me as an improvement: URLs like these should be more easily searchable by Google and other engines; they’re more like those you see on other sites; and you can now direct people to your own BMG sub-blog by using your name rather than your number. (Plus, no more annoying question marks.)
A few kinks remain to be worked out. The comments are still on the old question-mark system. The “Advanced Search” function appears to have been inadvertently disabled (I will look into that). Some of the less frequently-used features (like “Active Users”) still show user IDs under the old system. These issues should be sorted out over the next few days as the Soapblox folks identify and correct them.
Meanwhile, if you run into issues, please let us know, either in the comments, in separate posts, or by emailing us. Thanks!
Just a question — is this going to break all the old URLs or have they been preserved as aliases?
the old URLs should still work. If you find problems, please let us know!
I’m still waiting for Paul etc. to release the code as open source, as promised…
