As soon as tomorrow, the Massachusetts Senate will vote on a proposal (budget amendment 155) to extend greyhound racing for two more years.
This is nothing more than a cynical attempt by dog racing supporters to undermine the will of the voters on Question 3. Just a few months ago, citizens spoke with one voice on this issue, and their message was loud and clear: dog racing is cruel and inhumane and must end.
Dog racing supporters seem to want to live in an alternate universe where the vote to end dog racing never happened. However, in the real world the Greyhound Protection Act passed overwhelmingly. In fact, the greyhounds won in 12 of 14 counties and in nearly 290 cities and towns from one end of the state to the other.
Please call your State Senator today. Tell him/her to vote NO on budget amendment 155, and ask that they instead vote to uphold the will of the voters.
My adopted greyhound Zoe will be grateful for your help!
What the electorate wants is inconsequential subject to the government’s desire(s). Forget a casino, let’s put a dog racing track in Palmer.
For two reasons. First, the people have stated that they want this treatment of animals ended. Second, I don’t want to live in a community that approves of this kind of treatment of defenseless animals.
The people also voted to roll the income tax back to 5%.

p>I’m not saying I agree with it. But if we’re going to get on our high hounds about the Legislature ignoring the will of the voters, we have to be ready to deal with that stubborn fact.
And it was before your time on BMG, I think, but in the runup to the 06 election we (especially Bob) took some unpopular positions on that issue. Dig around the archives a bit and you’ll see what I mean.
