I plan to keep an eye on this. At this point, I’m hoping it’s a bit overblown.
My cynic side says: It’s great that the Globe took notice of a potential racial incident. It’s sad that it took one happening to a Harvard professor to get their attention.
I like Skip Gates, though, what little I know of him, so for all concerned, I hope this turns out to be a simple misunderstanding.
Though maybe today’s I Am America (And So Can You!) calendar entry was prophetic:
The greatest threat facing America today–outside of flag burning, yoga, and vaccination–is Higher Education.

I was thinking this morning that “Gatesgate” was the natural cognomen for this incident.
<
p>I think there’s plenty of wrong on both sides here. Why Gates got indignant for being asked for an id while breaking into a house (even if it’s his) is beyond me. I would hope that if I were breaking into a house a cop would want proof that I wasn’t a burglar.
<
p>Of course, once Gates got indignant, it seems the officer lost his professionalism as well. It seems like nobody’s an angel on this one.

Am I the only who has no idea what incident we’re talking about here? The reference to the Globe wasn’t hyperlinked.

I should have linked. Given the broad coverage, I figured everyone had heard.
