Senator Kerry to hold Town Hall in Somerville September 2, 2009

Information as received:

The Senator will host a town hall forum on Wednesday, September 2nd, in Somerville. While the forum is open and not exclusively focused on health care reform, as the dominant political issue of the day we expect it to be a major point of discussion. We’d welcome your attendance and voice on this and other vital issues.

Thanks as always for all of your participation and input on the health care debate.

This Town Hall Forum with Senator John F. Kerry will be in an “open forum” format, with attendance apparently “first come first served.”

Senator Kerry will hold an open town hall forum to discuss any and all issues facing the people of Massachusetts.  The forum will cover a broad range of issues and is open to all constituents as space allows.

      p>     This one I’m going to skip. I will be attending Representative Lynch’s forum on Thursday. I will call Kerry’s office though and express my support of single payor, and because that seems unlikely, also my support of the public option contained within the current proposal.

      p>     I know Senator Kerry’s office will accept calls expressing opinions because that is how he decided to vote for going to war in Iraq.

    • I can’t find announcement of the event on Kerry’s web site.  Why is it posted just on Organize for America?

      p>Makes me think it’s a rally, not one of my Senators holding a town hall with the neutral intention for me to be heard.  Might as well hold it at SEIU headquarters.

        Where is John Kerry?

        My question is: Where is John Kerry?  He sent a few staff members to various Cape Cod towns last week to conduct “town hall” meetings.  However, they were there only to collect questions, not to provide answers.

        As an attendee at the Sandwich meeting, I wasn’t sure if there would be a meeting since I had been notified only by a personal e-mail.  Since there had been absolutely no publication of any meetings on Cape Cod, I went to the Kerry Web site to check for a schedule before leaving the house Thursday morning only to discover there was no information on meetings available! I believe this lack of proper notification is inexcusable for the office of a United States Senator.

        Those who attended the meetings across the Cape appreciate the fact that when WXTK was told – by a Cape resident! – of the possible meetings, they immediately sought to verify the information by contacting the Kerry office. They then broadcast the meeting times as soon as possible. However, since the news hit the airwaves just an hour before some of the meetings, many interested residents were unable to attend. Our state representative was not informed. Had our senator, the Senate president, known, surely she would have sent a representative. Very poor planning, Senator Kerry!

        We arrived at the Jan Sebastian Way office before 11 a.m., the scheduled time. Due to the lack of public notification, less than 20 Sandwich residents were in attendance. About 30 minutes later, three representatives from the senator’s office arrived. We then had an opportunity for each attendee to express their concerns for about an hour. I am sure when Senator Kerry meets with his staff he will find that there was not a hint of uncivil behavior at any time.

        So, once again, my question is: Where is John Kerry? Now that his staff members have made him aware of the concerns of Cape Cod residents, I suggest that Senator Kerry hold a Cape-wide meeting at the community college – with proper public notification this time, please – and allow those of us with genuine concerns to meet with him.  I believe it is not too much to expect that he take the time to meet with the ordinary Americans who make up his constituency.

        • So, hopefully, when a notice says Senator Kerry is doing a Town Hall, it really will mean what it says.

            p>I have no knowledge of the person, office, etc.  I had also heard there was one in Chatham, but didn’t know how it went. I just happened to read this letter in the Patriot, and then saw your post.

            p>That said – I do find it hard to believe that 20-odd people went to the office just to talk to an aide (aren’t they there all the time anyway?).  So please – follow up with what happens in Somerville.

            • So I really cannot promise to attend that event in Somerville – someone else will have to commit to report on it.

              p>I also, with my replacement hip, am very careful about situations with crowds these days so if I am unable to “get there early” I am not likely to go at all.

              p>I find that the accommodation for those of us who consider ourselves a bit fragile leaves much to be desired most of the time, ergo, my activity on the internet may be greater than my activity in the rough and tumble of the world.
