2012 will be an even 50 years and a good milestone at which to decline reelection. I wonder if his friend Robert Byrd, who I believe is on the same election cycle as Kennedy, would be willing to step aside from President Pro Tempore after the 2010 elections and let Kennedy take it for his final two years. That woud be a fitting capstone to such a stellar career in the Senate.

today suggests that 2012 is not in the cards. Wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t fairly close himself at this point.
