Cross posted from Stop Predatory Gambling
A candidate for Massachusetts governor recently said a key part of his platform will be to promote more predatory gambling in the form of legalized sports betting like Delaware tried to do.
Yet according to a news report today: “A federal appeals court on Monday dealt another body blow to Delaware’s plans for a new sports betting lottery, saying it must be limited to parlay bets on professional football games.”
The ruling declared the lottery can only allow parlay bets which means bettors can pick the winners of at least three separate NFL games in a single wager. It’s more commonly referred to as a “football card.” Delaware state officials were aiming to legalize individual wagers on all games including NCAA contests.
Instead of promoting a business model that relies on 90% of the money coming from 10% of the people who use the product and pushes people into deeper levels of personal debt, perhaps government and candidates for public office will now consider offering products that encourage people to save money so they can accumulate the capital they need to live the American Dream.
The era of phony prosperity, casino capitalism and Bernie Madoff-style “something for nothing schemes” is over.

it doesn’t grow on trees, and you don’t get something for nothing. The costs associated with chasing free money among other things is the lost opportunity to work on the pressing issues facing our communities and our State.

The NCAA has been clear: you legalize betting, you get no NCAA postseason tournaments.
<
p>That means no using Worcester, Boston, or Springfield for NCAA regional tournaments, mens or womens hoops. I’ve personally been to NCAA tourney games in both Fleet and the DCU. I don’t know how much money they bring in, but it’s more than $0. It also means no NCAA hockey tournament games in-state.
<
p>It means if BC or UMass ever become strong in hoops, they won’t get local tournament games like colleges in NC, CA, IL, etc. get.
Maybe he can say he has learned more, about the NCAA, and about predatory gambling, and do a flip-flop. I think voters appreciate people who admit when they were wrong.
This is an issue where the more people understand the business model, the product and the kind of marketing behind it, the more strongly they oppose it.

Schools sell player replica jerseys all the time. They think they can control player’s lives without the player even being a member of their outdated institution.
Let’s see them sell out the Northeast hockey regional in someplace other than New England.
Let them move the northeast regional hockey tournament. They don’t do much here anyways.
It’s truly sad to see those who can’t afford it stand in line for scratch tickets, go out to their cars and return to cash in a few small winnings and buy more.

Mr. Mihos is about less taxes, not more. He is not a democrat. Mind you, predatory gambling is a democrat inspired thing.
Must be when you make laws and enact taxes that apply to everyone else but democratic legislators. in that case, I’ll be regressive.
