September 11 still feels like a solemn day.
People talk about remembering the lessons of that day. But the lessons only emerged later: the Bush administration, with the full cooperation of Congress, merely accelerated things they were already doing. For one thing, they already had a domestic wiretap program, they just stepped it up. They became more like themselves.
Our republic was damaged that day. But we can fix it.
By having the courage of our American convictions.
