The Globe is reporting that Stephen Pagliuca, Celtics co-owner and mega-millionaire is toying with the idea of buying a US Senate seat to help fill his leisure time and celebrity-strength ego. (This is the same guy who wanted to buy the Globe last month) http://www.boston.com/news/loc…
Whenever a mega-rich guy signals an interest in politics rest assured the wolves in consultants clothing will begin to close in on him and figure out ways to dig voraciously into those deep, deep pockets. (Policy and principles take a back seat to profits…and that is the hard truth…”Words matter!”…but money matters more! YES THEY CAN! YES THEY WILL!)
So was anyone surprised to see the following in Frank Phillips report:
“…Among those advising him now and likely to be part of his campaign team if he decides to run are: Doug Rubin, Governor Deval L. Patrick’s former chief of staff and architect of his 2006 campaign; Tad Devine, a Washington-based political consultant who was a top aide to Kennedy and Senator John F. Kerry; and Joel Benenson, a pollster who was President Obama’s chief pollster in last year’s presidential race.”….
My, o, my…Who said, “Every man has his (high) price?”
Mr. Pagliuca is said to have $400 million…that can buy a lot of “friends”……but you have to ask yourself, if you have that much money, can’t you think of anything better to do with it? Actually helping people rather than boosting personal celebrity and buying power…or making overly solicitous consultants rich?

It would be better Mr. Pagliuca would fund a scholarship to Mass. Art in architecture, or a chair in handicap design under his name – then allow consultants to batten by sucking along his ego…once upon a time wealthy philanthropists did build towards the future by funding colleges and scholarships and laboratories. Fewer photo ops, I guess in that old school, conscience-driven giving [as opposed to ego-driven posturing]. What has Pagliuca done or been to qualify HIM to be a senator anyway?

In my opinion, at any event. Too much heart and vision for today’s Republicans.
