Last update Sep 11, 2009 @ 10:52 PMQUINCY – Quincy police plan to seek an assault and battery charge against a deputy police chief on the Milton Police Department who allegedly struck a woman in the face late Thursday night.
Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan said the woman sought and was granted a restraining order Friday afternoon in Quincy District Court against Milton Deputy Chief Paul Nolan.
According to Keenan, the woman made several 911 calls around midnight Thursday while driving in a vehicle with Nolan. The woman alleged Nolan had struck her in the face. During an interview later, police saw her face was bruised.
Initially the woman said she did not want to press charges, Keenan said, and she made inconsistent statements. The decision to bring charges came after a follow-up interview on Friday, Keenan said.
“We handled it the way we would handle any investigation,” Keenan said. “As a result … we’re going to file charges of assault and battery against the officer.”
Nolan did not return a call to his cell phone late Friday. He has been a Milton Police officer for close to 30 years. He is also a lawyer with a law office in Quincy.
Milton Police Chief Richard G. Wells Jr. could not immediately be reached for comment.
Nolan, a spokesman for the department, notified reporters on Thursday morning that he would be on medical leave beginning Monday and hoped to return to duty in six weeks.

all be quoted accurately and directly if at all possible.
Here, a local Milton cop who is also a lawyer, is accused of a violent case of Assault and Battery on a woman. Additionally, the woman is not reported to be his wife or significant other which is a major information gap in the reportage. Therefore, selective editing would present something less than a balanced posting of the facts as they are reported.
<
p>Milton official need to focus on not only the alleged crime by one of their own policemen and how that might reflect on the entire department and police chief but raises a more significant question as to whether the taxpayers of Milton are footing the bill for Milton Deputy Police Chief Paul Nolan’s 6 Week Medical Leave.
<
p>Would think that whoever the Milton Police Chief is he/she should call for Nolan’s immediate suspension – probably with pay – until this matter is adjudicated in the courts.
If Milton Deputy Police Chief Paul Nolan is convicted he should be removed from the Milton Police Department immediately.

Are you protecting a Rogue Cop ?
hrs-kevin says
I have no problem with you doing a post that links to the story or where you paraphrase the story.
<
p>By ignoring the Patriot Ledger’s copyright you subject the owners of this site to a potential lawsuit. That is inconsiderate.

Edit this short piece. Would think that giving the news story complete attribution to The Patriot Ledger would be sufficient since there is no reporter byline to the news story.
Don’t want to get this fine discussion board in trouble. Just want to give attribution to The Patriot Ledger and have a discussion of what appears to be a Rogue Milton Cop.

What is this a sixth grade English class?
<
p>Write a couple of sentences giving the gist of the story, insert a link to the article on their website. Copying their article verbatim, even with attribution, deprives them of any revenue they may get from advertising on their website.
<
p>Having said all of that, I see that the Patriot Ledger puts their own content up under a Creative Commons license that allows copying for non-commercial purposes as long as attribution is shown, so you are in the clear here, and I take back my objection.

I was only attempting to report such a sensitive event accurately.
<
p>I am sure if I paraphrased the Patriot Ledger article on the Milton Cop assaulting a woman in his car you would have criticized me for paraphrasing and not being fair to the Milton Cop Paul Nolan.
kirth says
of that? Would your paraphrasing be unfair to Paul Nolan? If you don’t want that criticism, be fair.
hrs-kevin says
I am sure that I would do no such thing, nor did I actually criticize any paraphrasing that you did in any case.
<
p>My skepticism was regarding your implication that you would find it difficult to paraphrase when it seems that given your past posts your language skills are more than adequate to the task.
<
p>For someone with such a brash posting style you have awfully thin skin.
atticus says
accurate reporting of a Milton Deputy Chief of Police accused of Assault and Battery of a woman does.
<
p>It raises many questions none more important than will this cop return to the Milton Police force after his 6 Week Sick Leave – and who is paying for that sick leave – or not.
<
p>Seems to me that if this guy were not a cop he would be sitting in some jail cell and not out on a phony sick leave.
<
p>Another example of the Thin Blue Line closing its eyes to violence and corruption within it own ranks.
<
p>The Milton Police Chief whose name I just found out is Richard Wells must speak out on this if the Milton Police Department is to have any credibility with its citizens and beyond.
<
p>Silence by Milton Police Chief Richard Wells is an acceptance of Milton Deputy Chief of Police Paul Nolan’s alleged assault and battery on a woman.

This reminds me of a little 1/2 act play I wrote for JohnD here.
<
p>The discussion has exactly the same style.

I’m not sure how to refer to this behavior, now that Bob has outlawed use of the term “troll.”
<
p>Maybe Blue Free Republic?
kbusch says
I used to call such behavior “obtuse”.
huh says
Calling it obtuse is a misuse of the term.
huh says
I’m just uncomfortable with having the correct term declared a thought crime.
