Austin is 13 and lives in Sand Springs Oklahoma. He is 13 years old and has come out to the world and has proudly proclaimed that he is gay. His story is told in this coming Sunday’s New York Times Magazine. As I read his story I became more and more impressed at his incredible fortitude. I encourage every parent to read this article whether or not your child is gay. This is the way it is supposed to be. This story is really uplifting and encouraging. Kudos and best wishes to Austin.
Change is slow and I am sure that Austin will encounter much hatred and bigotry in his journey through life. Everyone deserves to be happy and I think that his openness regarding who he is will help him on his journey. I was happy and proud when President Obama was elected, happy for this country that had somehow moved past the deep seated racism that permeates our culture. This story also makes me happy. Hopefully more progress will be achieved and I can see the day when a man with Austin’s impressive attributes could be elected president.
