Yes, they’re just county-level GOP chairs in South Carolina. Still, the more this kind of thing happens around the country, the less seriously the GOP can be taken as a national player.
This appeared in “The Times and Democrat” (ironically enough), a newspaper in Orangeburg, SC. It’s a letter to the editor — these guys actually wrote this down and sent it out, hoping that it would be published.
Recently your newspaper published a letter from state Rep. Bakari Sellers attacking U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint and his opposition to congressional earmarks.
There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves. By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation’s pennies and trying to preserve our country’s wealth and our economy’s viability to give all an opportunity to succeed.

Even more hilariously, it appears that the “saying” referenced by our good friends Edwin and James dates back at least to William Lowndes, an English Treasury Secretary from the 17th century who, I think it is safe to say, was not Jewish. That part got grafted on later, and most likely only in some places. The mind boggles.

AP. Seems DeMitt is not welcoming the accolades by his supporters. They have since apologized.

These two statesmen attempted to write out a serious, well thought out defense of their Senator. They refered to “onerous testing” and got all fancy by writing “to whom” and such things like that. At first blush they seemed like intelligent fellows who were plain anti-semitic but then I asked myself, What would Huck Finn Say? I think Huck Finn would say that these two polecats were putting on airs, like the King and the Duke and that they really aren’t that smart.

… a valid interpretation, but what does it say about the context of the culture they surround themselves with that such an insult could be missed… by people trying to go out of their way to be diplomatic no less?!
