The announced reason is its “significantly improved” financial performance.

Yeah, that’s why I won’t sell Blue News Tribune either.
Or maybe the BMG hiring spree got their competitive juices flowing.

horrific news, just to answer David’s question. The NYT has done nothing to help the Boston Globe in all the years its owned it; it turned a once-great paper into shreds, all the while it never touched the NYT up until very, very recently — and even then, not at all to the same degree.

p>I would very much love to see a full time BMG staffer for some of those “competitive juices.” Can’t we do a BMG concert for that? I’d buy a ticket.
Out of say two million people a day who read newspapers in MA—assuming they read more than the sports page—
How many folks look at what’s here? BMG is very—very–very narrow. Almost 100% devoted to progressive/leftist causes. That’s not news—it’s editorial comment.
the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. One can only hope. That rag has gone from mediocre to egregious over the past few years and is nothing more than a right-wing mouthpiece. Their editorial staff makes Dick Cheney look reasonable. Dianne Williamson is worth saving just for her spunk alone and Clive McFarland can rattle a few cages that need rattling, but the rest of them should find new careers. Pathetic.
Yes it has gone downhill. Now they raised the price to a dollar, toilet paper is cheaper. Cleaning hint: newspaper is a great wipe to clean glass. Try it.
Disgraceful. Sinacola, who I’m told leads their editorial board, is an ideologue through and through. I can’t tell you how many people who are actually rather conservative in their views tell me they think the paper has become a joke. And when you combine that with WTAG, well, that’s a winning combo right there.
I’m not at all sure — but still willing to give the Times Company some benefit of the doubt. Their New York Edition is quite good.

p>Re: my snark, I find it hard to take their statement at face value. Maybe I’m cynical, but if I’m not, I don’t think news organizations should speak in, well, shades of truth. Maybe the Globe’s financial performance improved over what they expected.

Curious: Has anyone heard anyone (not someone here) talking about this?
