One must have a passion for politics
To regard the frost and the plow mounds
Of the Arlington Center sidewalks crusted with snow;
And have been a feminist and a Democrat for a long time
To cheerfully hold the Coakley signs shagged with ice,
And wave to motorists in the distant glitter
Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a car honk,
Which is the sound of a Coakley supporter
Driving by in a warm car
With scarcely a thought
For the campaign volunteers, who listen in the snow,
And, doing their part, contribute
To the success of the candidate who is not there and the shared ideals that are.
Please share widely!
