In a post victory interview tonight Senator-Elect Scott Brown was asked how he came up with the memorable phrase that it was not “Senator Kennedy’s seat but the peoples’ seat” when David Gergen at the Kennedy Institute Debate asked Brown a question condescendingly about this being “Senator Kennedy’s seat”.
According to Scott Brown David Gergen was very dismissive of Scott Brown before the debate began and Brown stated to the reporter from Channel 7 that “Gergen didn’t even know who I was…”
So, when Gergen continued that condescending and dismissive tone to Scott Brown in the debate Brown said the phrase “it is not Senator Kennedy’s seat but the peoples’ seat” just came to him at the right time.
If there is a next time the Kennedy Institute would do better to hire someone local who actually knew the candidates.
As to Brown, he gave an excellent though often rambling victory speech. However, it did have overtones of a dumb actor’s overly long winner’s speech at the Academy Awards. I was waiting for the music to play under Brown to get him off the stage. Still, in all he was effective and I don’t think Right-Wing Nut Republicans appreciated the fact that he referred to himself about a dozen times as an independent. Fox News was not amused.
