The Deval Patrick administration has found it’s voice. This morning’s Matt Viser piece — Patrick seeks new curbs in state pensions — is the right message at the right time:
Governor Deval Patrick proposed new limits yesterday on pension payouts for state employees, seeking to cast himself as a reformer as he heads into what is expected to be an intense reelection campaign.
I encourage Governor Patrick to build on this welcome step forward with a clear, loud, unambiguous and immediate response to the simultaneous hand-grenade exploding in Mayor Menino’s City Hall machine — City violates pension law a third time, panel finds:
The Menino administration approved a lucrative consulting job for a retired State Police detective who was already earning a sizable public pension, a move that a city watchdog agency says violated state law.
From the second piece:
The Finance Commission’s finding marks the third time in less than a year that the city has been reprimanded for violating the same pension law.
The latter piece provides a golden opportunity for Governor Patrick to demonstrate his commitment to reform. I strongly encourage him to seize it.
