As we’re fond of observing, our own Charley on the MTA is the aphoristic genius who, back in 2006, coined the phrase “Big Dig culture of Beacon Hill” (sometimes seen in its short form, “Big Dig culture”).
But then I read this:
“It is the poster child for everything that’s wrong with government,” says Mihos. “The term ‘Big Dig culture’ is operative five years ago, today, and 10 years hence.”
Five years ago … but that was 2005, a year before anyone to our knowledge had ever used the term “Big Dig culture” … unless … wait, could it be? Maybe Christy Mihos, in 2005, was able to read BMG posts that would not be written until 2006!!!!
Maybe he can go back in time and pay off Manzoli so he doesn’t end up with a lien on his house! đŸ˜‰
…he’s bad at the maths.
that seems clear enough. đŸ˜‰
maths. It’s so U.K. đŸ™‚
…Joan Vennochi wrote about the Big Dig Blame Game in which she quoted Romeny taling about its ‘culture of corruption’. Mihos used the phrase on radio with Jordan Levy while kvetching about Jane Swift. so while Charley can claim written credit, the phrase really was earlier.
and even beyond that the classic Big Dig commercial which BTW sums up all of politics was the commercial.
You know the one.
Charley didn’t invent Big Dig Culture, he named it, with the literal, obvious shorthand phrase that refers to the culture of the Big Dig. In fact, his own post about it points out that it has been around “a long period of time.”
Note that Charley didn’t capitalize “culture”.

p>Also, speaking of Big Dig Culture and Charley’s quotes about it, did anyone see this?
Good thing no one was claiming anything else.
David seems to think that, prior to Charley’s coining of the phrase, the term wasn’t “operative”. Well, it had to have been “operative” before Charley used it, or else it would have been incomprehensible gibberish. Instead, everyone knew exactly what he was talking about, and I bet everyone would have known what he was talking about if he had used it a few years earlier too. Maybe in 1990, it wouldn’t have been operative, but I’d say Mihos is correct in his timeline.
It was obviously an “on the lighter side” post. You’re getting awfully bent out of shape over a trifle.

p>And, um, Charley did invent the phrase. So there ya go.
Hilarious. Funny how no one had thought of something so obvious before 2006.
