IMPORTANT NOTE: Senator Fargo IS a candidate for re-election. Mass Beacon has retracted this story.
According to Mass Beacon, State Senator Sue Fargo is calling it quits this year. This creates the 11th open State Senate seat for the 2010 cycle, out of a total of 40 seats!
Two Republicans are already in the race to succeed Fargo, Chelmsford Selectman Eric Dalhberg and 2008 challenger Sandi Martinez.
For the Democrats, potential candidates could include State Reps Tom Stanley and Peter Koutounjian of Waltham, and Jay Kaufman of Lexington.
Green party gubernatorial candidate Jill Stein also lives in the district, and could potentially switch over to the senate race.
UPDATE: MassBeacon.com has retracted their story. Sen. Fargo has confirmed that she IS indeed runny for re-election. Sorry for the confusion.

Conor from MassBeacon.com here. Just got off the phone with Fargo’s chief of staff, who informed me that I am wrong. He says Fargo WILL run for re-election.

p>As I noted on my blog:
1) My source was very solid.
2) I am an idiot.
I saw her people out collecting nomination signatures several weeks ago in Bedford. Glad to hear this rumor is busted by MassBeacon.

p>Davesoko, can we update this diary to “Fargo Running for Re-election”?
