Was that a typo in today’s Boston Globe? It was reported in the Globe that Guy Glodis has $800,000 in his campaign war chest. I couldn’t believe it, so I checked the Office of Campaign and Political Finance and I found out the Globe was WRONG. I fact, Guy Glodis has $834,352.35! So I decided to check the other Auditor Democratic candidates war chests and it shows Suzanne Bump has $34,471.47 (of which $25,000 came from herself, as a loan to her campaign), and Mike Lake has $21,825.89
Republican Party endorsed candidate Mary Connaughton has $73,706.78.
The Republicans are going to raise the money for Mary Connaughton so I think it’s important to consider this when determining who to support for the Democatic nominee. It is going to take $$ and lots of it, to keep up with the RGA and Republican money machine who litter our television screens with filthy lies and negative attack ads. As a lifelong democrat and twenty-five year activist, I would hate to lose this seat to the Republicans and would urge you to consider which candidate has the best resources. If we lose, We will never get it back!
Think long and hard about who truly has the resources, geography, and organization to take on the RGA and National and State Republican money!
Like him or not Guy Glodis is our best chance to keep this seat Democrat. All of the Democratic candidates are equally impressive but in the final analysis, neither Lake nor Bump have the resources or man power to keep up.

I don’t think any of these candidates will be able to outwork Guy Glodis. I have seen this guy show up for the opening of an envelope, shaking hands and kissing babies.
christopher says
…of basing my primary vote on who has the most money. I’m sure any of the candidates (I’m supporting Bump.) would be very competitive. We have our party organs too, remember.
ryepower12 says
he still wouldn’t be the ‘best guy’ for the job or to ‘keep the seat.’
<
p>Nice job shilling for Glodis, though, with your recent account creation date and lack of posts on anything but Glodis. Get back to me when you’ve written on another topic and for a different campaign and then I may just believe you’re not some campaign flacky or Glodis’s friend.
<
p>Disclosure, please.

My interest as a progressive is not to keep this seat in ANY Democrats hands but in a GOOD Democrats hands. So far all I’ve heard about Glodis is how many jobs he gives to relatives and political patrons, how he has kept his department bloated and full of pork, and how he is going to continue the ‘tax and hack’ fiscal policies of his predecessor DiNucci. I am tired of old ward heelers and hackish pols taking these seats without opposition. Bump has some great ideas to bring this office into the 21st century, updating its anemic website, and really bringing transparency into the mix including an independent audit of our finances. She will also make cuts to her department where necessary to lead by example when it comes to fiscal austerity. I am sure Diamond Joe DiNucci will retire to Florida and take a few state cars, computers, and bloated pension funds with him. I want an honest, open, transparent Auditor and Bump is my woman. I do not care how much money she has raised so long as she remains honest and committed to helping out the people of MA.
<
p>And frankly the Republican seems more committed to those values than Glodis who wants another promotion and another chance to cash out on our dime. I wouldn’t be surprised if he took a county pension and doubled dipped on his salary. Frankly its time we eliminate the last vestiges of the county hackarama, is there really anything the Sheriffs do that the State Police can’t?
ryepower12 says
because I agree with pretty much everything you said.
south-shore-dem says
it’s just that it takes a ton of money and organization to run an effective statewide campaign. I was merely pointing out that of the 3 candidates Guy Glodis has the money and man power. That’s all.
<
p>Having said that, I will support whoever the Democratoic nominee is REGARDLESS of who I vote for in the primary. The problem, as I see it, is Democrats HAVE primaries and they get ugly, nasty and contentious. The Bump supporters that have commented on this thread is a perfect example the venom that spews all over.
<
p>Democratic Party Chairman John Walsh is a South Shore guy that I know and he is constantly preaching UNITY and a “coordinated” campaign effort after the primary so that we can win in November. It is my hope Glodis, Bump and Lake supporters work together in this same spirit of unity that Chairman Walsh preaches, to support the Democratic nominee in November.

The Jon Golnik moles on RMG. Remember Steve Pagliuca? He and his money couldn’t even buy a democratic nomination.
We wouldn’t allow Guy in the Rpublican party, he’s too conservative for us.

I will never, ever vote for Guy Glodis for any office. After he won the nomination for sheriff, I voted Republican for the first (and only, so far) time in my life. In the awful event he manages to win this primary, I will vote another candidate, and if Mary Connaughton turns out not to be a radical right-winger, it may be her.
<
p>That said, I’m very glad we have an excellent candidate in Suzanne Bump with a positive argument to vote for who has the experience and ideas to really run the Auditor’s office.

I met Nat four years ago at the Green-Rainbow convention, when he was nominated for Auditor that year, but later dropped out for personal reasons. I’m a big fan, and though I’ll be voting Bump in the primary, I’ll probably vote for Fortune in the general.
<
p>The attacks that Nat Fortune got at that convention in 2006 by the radical wing of the Green-Rainbows was the reason I left that party. People who were actively denying the genocide in Darfur were criticizing Nat for voting in his role on the school committee to hold a fundraiser selling “United We Stand” T-shirts with the US flag on it.

…sorry – my bad. I only came on here to get a sense of where other Dems are at. To get a thought-provoking discussion going. Again, sorry – my bad.
<
p>I am a moderate democrat. For me, it’s pretty simple. I don’t subscribe to the extremist views of the far right or the far left. I believe that most conservatives are dead wrong when it comes to social stances, i.e. gay marriage, abortion, etc. I have both Liberal and Conservative views. I believe in tradition and want gradual change.
<
p>Having said that, I have always voted the Democratic nominee regardless of which he/she leaned.
<
p>What have I discovered by some of the responses in this forum? The only thing worse than being a moderate/conservative Democrat is……nothing.
<
p>It’s this kind of division that we can point to explain why we (Dems) are going to lose elected seats at every level of government this year.
<
p>Not to repeat, but as Party Chairman Walsh says: “Unity = Victory.”
<
p>God Bless.
stomv says
This isn’t a Democratic blog. It does have lefty/liberal/progressive leanings, which often aligns very nicely with the Democratic visions for government.
<
p>It ain’t the same.
sabutai says
I’m a moderate as well, and leaning toward Bump. There are some good reasons to support Glodis. And money isn’t one of them.
<
p>If you can make an argument for Glodis that’s based on more than his campaign account…if you can handle a thought-provoking discussion that includes actual disagreement (the Democratic Party’s leading export) with what you said, keep posting. Fight for your candidate — what about the high percentage of donations from his employees? What about your claim that the RGA is going to spend money on this race?
<
p>I questioned Deval Patrick in 2006 and I got it with both barrels, because folks around here were serious in their support for him, and willing to defend his record. They didn’t convince me, but set up a (largely) good example to follow.
south-shore-dem says
I don’t have a horse in this race. It was just that after reading the Globe article on Glodis’ $800 Grand in the bank, it just got me to thinking about campaign costs like mailings, tv spots, ads, billboards etc..
<
p>My “horse” is in another contest altogether: Bill Keating for Congress. It was while campaigning around the South Shore and Plymouth County for Keating the last 3 months at town meetings and local town elections I could not help but notice Glodis’ organization in terms of visibilities and handing out literature at the polls or at the meetings. Not once did I see a Bump or Lake team out working it. Not once!
<
p>I will say this, however, if Lake had the $$ or organization I would definitely be with him. He truly is the outsider. Glodis and Bump are the insiders. Glodis as a former rep, senator, and sheriff and then Bump as a 20 year product of the Beacon Hill gang as a former 4-term rep, lobbyist, and Deval Patrick appointee. Mike Lake brings a refreshing new perspective… very progressive.
<
p>Mike Lake seeks to change Beacon Hill at a time when public anger at government is at a fever pitch. I like what he says about implementing energy audits across the state, supporting Massachusetts’ goal of becoming a leader in green energy and saving millions of taxpayer dollars in the process. I has an opportunity to hear his presentation on why he’s running for Auditor and I’ll tell you I was VERY impressed!
<
p>Also, look at his education 5 COLLEGE DEGREES!!! Holy smokes.
<
p>He’s got great ideas..checkout his website http://www.electmikelake.com/a…
<
p>Unfortunately, it’s gonna take more to win…
sabutai says
Why not donate and volunteer for Mike, try to help him build an organization over the summer, and re-assess as the primary draws near?

<
p>You think national Republican associations are spending lots of dough on a campaign for Massachusetts Auditor?

But think about what you are saying. Is all that matters that the guy be a Democrat?
<
p>With $800k you have to ask, who gave him all that money and what do they expect to get back from the auditor.
<
p>I haven’t looked at his OCPF reports – but I wonder if that money is really all from regular voters.
tamoroso says
Are you seriously telling people to vote for Guy Glodis because he has the most money?
<
p>Gorge rising in 3, 2, 1…
<
p>I’ll try to be fair. I’m told (haven’t done the research myself) that Guy did a good job as Worcester County Sheriff. Whether that’s his own ability or the ability to hire good people and get out of their way (and keep others from interfering with them while they do the job) is in some ways irrelevant as long as it gets the job done.
<
p>If Guy is your candidate, great. But “Support Guy Glodis, he has the money to beat the Republican” is not a message that really resonates with me. I suspect most voters are going to be asking more of him than “Show me the money!” Show me the ability, show me the hard work, show me why I should vote for you.
kbusch says
Some candidates are simply terrible at raising money and “candidating” requires a lot of that. Someone who can’t meet the “admissions requirements” for a statewide race is a lost cause.

I can say, unequivocally, that I would not vote for Guy Glodis for any office under any circumstances. When he comes to my town, it’s not the Dems he goes to, it’s the Republicans. Indeed, one of the most strident tea-bag types in town is the person who squires him through our summer festival days and even “volunteered” in Glodis’s previous campaigns in a position of some responsibility.
<
p>More and better Democrats. It’s a no-go on Glodis.

While the GOP will certainly spend money on the Republican candidate, there IS a primary between Kamal Jain and Mary Connaughton, so any spending will be post-primary.
