Peter Gelzinis has an excellent piece in today’s Herald profiling Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral. It’s nice to see the Sheriff receive the recognition she deserves after an extraordinary first full term in office.

I have lost count as to the number of clients who have gotten GEDs, done classes in child development or parenting, or learned a trade on Andrea Cabral’s watch. I believe she is saving lives, big time. I find the statistic that recidivism has dropped 44% in Suffolk County since Andrea Cabral became sheriff nothing short of inspirational!

p>You realize THAT means Cabral has saved us taxpayers several million dollars? Way to go, Sheriff Cabral!

A prisoner is a loss of money for our society. But give a person an education for a few dollars and they can make much more money with that degree, and then the wealth they earn creates tax revenue.

Of course there are still systemic issues that need to be addressed in Suffolk as in any county jail system, but overall, Sheriff Cabral understands and embraces the best practices to reduce recidivism and increase community engagement.
