Looking for a way to celebrate Independence Day that helps elect Democrats AND do something fun with non-political friends and family, and is good exercise? Consider marching in a parade with your favorite Democratic candidate.
So often as Democratic activists we have to make choices between helping our candidates and spending time with family. There are actually many ways that we can do both! “Mike from Chelmsford” and Lynne were among other BMGers who went on the canal tour at Lowell National Historic Park and then went canvassing for Jamie Eldridge back when Jamie was running for Congress. Mike, if you’re reading and have a minute, can you tell the story about the kids and the frog?
Back to this weekend. There are many great opportunities to march with candidates. Also, many of you are working on collecting support cards for the Patrick/Murray campaign. You can either march in the parade or work the crowd or both!
If you already have plans to spend time with family and friends, bring a few cards with you and ask family and friends to support Deval Patrick and Tim Murray’s re-election. Can you think of a better time to talk about the importance of Democracy and representation than Independence Day.
Betsy from Connecticut just sent this out.
“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” – Erma Bombeck
And that it is- With so many wonderful ways to spend the extended daylight hours of July, gather some friends and family, grab a camera, pack a picnic and celebrate America!!
Consider this an open thread on how you can combine the celebrating the holiday and helping Democracy and Democrats!
Campaigns, make your best pitch! Send details! Experienced marchers, send advice. Sun block is the big thing.
Enjoy the holiday!

Tim needs to cut down on the hot summer parades.
On an extraordinarily hot Labor Day, a friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, agreed to march in a parade with a candidate. She was told that the campaign, which shall also remain nameless, would be supplying campaign T-shirts. She dressed in a skimpy halter top, hoping to stay as cool as possible when she marched wearing the promised T-shirt. When she arrived and was told that they had forgotten the T-shirts, she was mortified. Always have a plan B.
The parade I’m marching in? The organizer keeps sending out dark emails warning people NOT to have thier morning coffee, as there are no ‘facilites’ on the four mile parade route….
Thanks for posting this Kate! For those who would like to march in parades with Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, please find more info on his facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/timmur…

p>Assembles at 8:30 in the old Wal-Mart parking lot on Bourne St. and starts at 10am on Hedge Road, Plymouth
In fact, so were O’Leary, Kasperowicz, Malone and Perry (no sign of the elusive Hayden). Not just surrogates, but the candidates themselves!
<
p>Independence Day falling like this is a bonus for campaigns – some towns like Mashpee were as early as July 1, and others go all the way through July 5.
<
p>All these guys were talking about how many they could hit! For example, Cahill didn’t MARCH in Chatham, just worked the waiting floats with people as they assembled (we were asked to be there 8 am or earlier for a 10 am start) since he was headed to Pepperell instead.
Anybody who walks 6 miles tomorrow in a suitcoat is really showing they want the job. And anybody who only marches in one parade this season doesn’t want the job.
While it does show dedication to walk all these parades I don’t think we should judge candidates by how many parades they do.
…but I think it’s nice to see that a candidate wants the job. If they won’t work for the job, why would they work if they get it?
Here’s a photo montage from the Chatham parade from Cape Cod Today.
<
